Perrot, Jules
(1810-1892)
   dancer, choreographer
Born in lyon, Jules Perrot studied under leading dancers and debuted at the opéra de Paris, accompanying the celebrated dancer Maria Taglioni (1830). There he demonstrated his exceptional talent, strength, and agility (Flore et Zéphire). Having met the dancer Carlotta Grisi in 1833, Perrot made several tours through Europe with her before returning triumphantly to Paris. Following this, he was named first dancer and ballet master at Her Majesty's Theater in London (1842-48), where he choreographed a number of works. But it was at the Imperial Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, that he reached the height of his career (1849-59). An incomparable interpretor of dance during the romantic period, Perrot was called by his enthusiastic admirer, Théophile gautier, "Perrot the airborne."
